Does Claude Have Watermarks? What a Text Cleaner Can Change

Understand the difference between Claude’s statistical text watermark, invisible Unicode characters, and file metadata before you clean a document.

Updated September 8, 2026

Hidden characters are not proof of a Claude watermark.

This site inspects and cleans Unicode text. It does not detect or verify removal of Anthropic’s statistical text watermark.

What Anthropic actually describes

Anthropic’s August 14, 2026 explanation describes a statistical pattern in word selection, based on a version of SynthID-Text. It explicitly says that its text watermark does not add hidden characters. A browser tool that deletes zero-width spaces is therefore doing a different job.

Read Anthropic’s technical explanation and its current help article for model availability and the distinction between text markings and file metadata.

Three different things called a watermark

TypeWhat it isWhat this tool does
Statistical text watermarkA pattern in generated word choicesDoes not detect it or verify its removal
Invisible UnicodeCharacters such as a zero-width space or soft hyphenCounts character categories and applies the cleanup options you select
File metadataInformation stored alongside text or image contentCan remove SVG metadata blocks or create a new raster image; does not inspect or count image metadata fields

A cleanup result you can check yourself

The sample button in the text cleaner loads text with deliberately inserted characters. Those are test characters, not a sample of an official watermark.

InputDefault resultReason
water[U+00AD]markwatermarkThe optional soft hyphen is removed
hello[U+00A0]worldhello worldThe nonbreaking space becomes a regular space
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Emoji joining characters are preserved by default
a[U+200B]babThe zero-width space is removed; no word boundary is guessed

Check word boundaries before copying the result. Removing a zero-width space between words may join them. A changed-character count reports text edits, not how many watermarks were removed.

Why keep some invisible characters?

Some invisible characters do useful work. Joining characters combine emoji and help shape words in languages such as Persian. Direction controls affect mixed right-to-left and left-to-right text. Variation selectors can choose an emoji or text presentation.

The default mode preserves language and emoji formatting. The advanced formatting option can remove those characters, so compare the result carefully before using it. The original text stays in the input panel.

What happens to images and SVG?

Raster images are decoded and exported as a new PNG, JPG, or WebP in your browser. The new file does not copy the source metadata wholesale, but this tool does not inspect individual metadata fields or validate a provenance signature. JPG and WebP output can be lossy; animated inputs are not preserved as animations. A logo drawn into the pixels remains visible.

SVG cleanup can remove metadata elements and comments when selected. PDF and DOCX are not supported. Keep your original file and review the exported copy.

Does a clean result mean “human-written”?

No. A text without invisible characters could have been written by a person or a model. This tool does not score authorship or promise a result from an AI detector. Use the output as cleaned text, not as evidence about who wrote it.
